I am amazed by the quality and the versatility of the Magnum-K. It has a unique sound that is perfect for bus compression and mastering. Even on a track by track basis. The K-Comp helps with taming that harsh 3k area very well. The AIR band is a HUGE bonus for it being a great compressor already. Amazing work from MAAG.

Let's start by getting the negatives out of the way - there aren't any! If you want the ultimate in bus control, then look no further than the Magnum-K, because you have already found exactly what you are looking for in this wonderful sounding unit.
Not only do you have 2 channels of seriously elegant compression, which can work either in linked or independent modes but also capable of processing 2 mono sounds at the same time but you then get the K-comp for extra control over that touchy area around 3kHz and on top of that there is an ultra-smooth soft limit section to prevent you getting too carried away & blowing those tweeters.
But wait - there is still more!
You also have a parallel EQ mode that somehow focusses on the original source sound and then blends it with the 2 compressed signals (pre soft-limit) for some truly 'secret sauce' mojo. This naturally includes the famed Maag 'Air Band' as well as a parametric Low-Mid band so you can really focus in on that critical range.
Finally there is the splendid TMT 'virtual analogue' option that takes the tolerance bands of the original discrete circuit components to give you the natural variation found on all analogue consoles where no 2 channels sound identical. If all that is too much there is of course a pure digital mode that bypasses this, but trust me when I tell you that nobody in their right minds would ever want to do that. Still, it's there just in case.
It's strongest location in a mix for me is on a bus - the drum bus will certainly benefit from the M/S circuitry, which will allow you to have a tight & punchy centre with the air you expect on the sides - it simply sounds glorious!
Try it - you will be very happy you did!
  • Use your ears compressor

I like the colors, that's a good starter. The blue compression led isn't a success for me. Even with a retina display you barely see it. About the sound, I can't use it on every genre, style music. The EQ and the soft clipper is a nice addition, if you u use this compressor more in a live situation. I have this compressor for instance in an online radio processing chain in Gig Performer, with a bx_opto as AGC. Works very good. But like the other reviewers told, the GUI can be better. It's a compressor which you have to use your ears for, maybe that's the reason there are no markings on the knobs.
  • Air band rocks. GUI could use a couple tweaks.

The tiny blue-on-blue threshold indicator can be difficult to see. And with small knobs, the cursor often ends up covering the numerical value that pops up underneath when adjusting down. Not super necessary since the knobs adjust in 0.5 increments, but upper left corner of a knob would be better. Other than that, a sweet and versatile comp/eq.

I'v been using this plugin on my drum buss and it's amazing the tone and character you can get from this compressor. The air band is amazing to bring out the shine on any mix too!

I find this channel strip useful for almost everything, less for compression, and of the most curious thing they said to sell it is its compression capabilities "the new Nirvana Compression. It has no even numbers on its attack and release knob. Anyway, this has TMT emulation and it might have it's own "taste". So, that's why I use it on my buses, even with its big bottom frequencies phase bad stuff.
