elysia Phil's Cascade is based on a very esoteric hardware! It can be heared that the components come from the last century, it does spice up your DAW, from vintage distortion to subtle exciter. The tonal variation is limited, but to me it doesn't matter, because I use all PA distortion and exciter plugins, and while Phil's Cascade is less flexible, it has a 'quality' that is unique for plugins. I percieve that it has exactly the warmth and shine that so many ITB producers have been looking for, although leaning to a vintage tone.
Plugin Alliance response
From subtle to brutal
After I learned with the Vertigo VSM-3 that distortion on the master track can improve the mix - I now can give the needed "touch" on specific instruments. I can say that the Cascade is great on vocals and sampled instruments. (I am sure it will be great on synth sounds - but I don't use synths very often...) I have experienced that there is no need to start with the boost function - and it is very likely that the dampening option (e.g. on E-Piano) might do the job... Boosting is another option to make it sound harsh and brutal, if you want. To my experience it can do a lot in unexpected ways. It is a great option to sculpt sounds of an instrument - far more versatile than I expected.

This plugin is very unique in the character it brings as well as the flexibility in being able to dial in just the right amount of each component to achieve the sound you want. I love the warmth and the saturation it provides when pushed. The mix function allows for parallel processing which is great for the master buss or stems. Sounds lovely on drums and bass particularly. There's not much to really complain about. Some built in sidechain filtering would be on my wish list. Overall this thing is a beast.
It's every thing they say it is. !! Great!
Phil's Cascade Plugin
The Elysia Phil's Cascade is a beast of a plugin! I used this on a bass track on a new reggae song I am mixing, it just defined the sound of that bass and made it stand out in the mix, just where I wanted it. I also used it on acoustic and electric guitar, this baby gave it the fire it needed. This would be a permanent staple in all my mixes as the Blackbox is. Great work as always Plugin Alliance!!
I love this!
I own both the Blackbox and VSM. This is another great saturation plugin to add to my collection and it's definitely different. It sounds really nice on synths! I love the flexibility of this plugin, it really works on anything.

I was intrigued by the descriptions of how this product was conceived and developed and I'd had some good experience with the simpler "Black Box" plugin. I was mixing a cajun/zydeco style song, tracked with a string bass and I wanted to give it more of the punch an electric bass would have had, without losing the acoustic sound. Phil's Cascade worked like a charm and we could see lots more potential in the flexible tone/routing options. Love it.

Very unique tool that responds to every tiny tweak. Can't really think of another plug-in that does what this does to your audio: add warmth, emphasize spatial and harmonic characteristics, mute or brighten in ways that, again, don't recall EQs or the harmonics tools we're already familiar with. Analog character without analog flaws!
